Height Control and 3D Spatial Monitoring on Autonomous Forklift Trucks

MR15-Q80 3D radar sensor combines object detection and height control for handling goods carriers

Industrial trucks in logistics – especially automated guided vehicles (AGVs) – require sensor technology for navigation and to prevent collisions and personal injury. LIDAR scanners are normally used here for safety-oriented environment monitoring. However, they only have limited suitability for the vertical monitoring of lift paths on autonomous forklift trucks, as they usually detect a small vertical opening angle. Height control is also not a safety-relevant function.

Your Benefits

  • High availability as radar sensors are less susceptible to interference than LIDAR sensors
  • Simplified commissioning thanks to visualization in Turck Automation Suite
  • Cost-effective, as the 3D measurement can replace several alternative sensors
  • Large detection area with a range of 15 meters and opening angles of +-60 degrees horizontally and +-50 degrees vertically

  • Precision work: the radar scanner at the top of the stacker records the height of the roller conveyor

  • The MR15-Q80 3D radar scanner features both a CAN input and an I/O port

  • Detection area with 15 meters and opening angles of +-60 degrees horizontally and +-50 degrees vertically

Radar height control

Turck's MR15-Q80 3D radar scanner is suitable for checking the height of the forklift. It provides the necessary information for all three spatial dimensions and not only detects where obstacles begin but also where they end. This information facilitates precise and safe control of the lifting movement. The data can also be used to prevent damage to vehicles, goods and system elements. Camera systems, which are frequently used for these tasks, are usually more complex and expensive to commission.

Six adjustable warning radii and three signal spaces

A switching signal can be output for up to six freely definable warning radii. It is also possible to teach three-dimensional signal spaces, which can also trigger a switching signal. The 3D data is output via the IO-Link output. The digital interface is also used for parameterization.
